Chapter fifteen

Figuring Shit Out

Miami

I told everyone to fuck off. For about a week. Then I had to either book the hotel for more time or go home. I didn’t know which direction to take, so I did the one thing I shouldn’t have. I called my mother.

“Allesandro. My boy. When are you coming home?”

“Soon. But I’m trying to get back with Jinx.” I lay back on the hotel bed with my cell at my ear.

“You mean Roger? He’s such a good boy.”

“Yes, Roger. I miss him. I want the band back together, too. We played that festival thing I told you about.” She had always liked Jinx, before we called him Jinx. Roger and Sandro were two musicians with a bright future, gigging around Central Florida, Miami, and Ft. Lauderdale. It had been fun, and we’d gotten to know each other well. He’d practically grown up with me and lived with us at my mother’s house when he needed a home. He even hung out with my kid brother, something I rarely wanted to do. He’d been family. Then he was gone.

“How did it go?”

“It was f–amazing.” I corrected my language, but mi Madre huffed.

“So why are you calling me, Sandro?” she asked using her stern voice, the one that always had me trembling.

She always knew when there was more to the conversation, so I didn’t bother with the can’t I just call my mother bullshit. “I can tell he wants to get back together, but he’s afraid it will end up the same as last time.”

“Will it?”

“Not if I can help it.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“He’s ghosting me.” I sounded like a petulant child, but that’s where I was.

I heard her cursing in Spanish in the background. Then she got back on the phone. “If that means he’s not taking your calls, go see him.”

“I haven’t called him yet.”

“Stupido. Call him. Not me.”

“But—”

“No but, Sandro. Call him. See him. Make him at least listen to your heart.”

I sat up straight. She was right. “When did you get so smart?”

“When I married your dad. Now go fix your problem. Te amo.”

“Love you, too, mi Madre.”

I jumped in the shower after that. I needed to be fresh when I called Jinx. I hoped like hell he would take my call. But he knew what a dip-shit I could be. Surely, he would at least listen. I was starting to formulate a plan, but it all revolved around Jinx. Refreshed and determined, I picked up my cell and tapped the screen.

“Yeah.” Jinx answered with a gruff tone. I did a happy dance that he even answered. I’d choose him every time and anyway I could get him. I’d take the gruff.

“I’m sorry. Can we talk about this?”

Jinx grumbled something I couldn’t make out before answering, “I don’t know.”

“Ah…Jinx. Roger. I love you, and I’m trying so hard.” I grabbed at my short hair, wishing for the first time that it was as long as I used to wear it. Maybe because I was feeling all the nostalgia, wishing for the good old days, back in the beginning.
